Newport Folk Festival 2014

I love going to concerts and seeing live music, but had never been thrilled by the idea of music festivals. One day of Governor’s Ball after a massive rain storm and I wasn’t sure the experience was worth the insanity…

But then came Newport. My friends and I bought 3-day tickets before the lineup was even announced. It was like Christmas morning everyday a new artist was added. The festival itself was so laid back and well run that the time spent away from the stages was just as enjoyable as the performances: good food, fun vendors, great views. There was even the Family Tent where artists were featured by doing short “pop-up” sets in between main stage changes.

Above is a little montage of my time at the festival, featuring a song by Ages and Ages called “No Nostalgia”. Enjoy (and go to Newport next year)!

The Saint Johns – “Your Head and Your Heart”

Hailing from Florida, this country folk duo settled down in Nashville to bring us this lovely sound:

Spellbinding, mesmerizing: these are the words that come to mind when watching this beautiful performance by Sarah Jarosz recorded by Mason Jar Music. The simple stirring of dust, catching the light that’s cascading through the windows, creates a dreamy suspended atmosphere, pulling the physical performance into the realm of the song.

BOY – “Little Numbers”

DSC_0475-BOYLast night BOY had the second show of their premiere US tour at Union Hall in Brooklyn. The small venue suited the female duo from Hamburg, as they had a wonderful magnetism and sweet, humble disposition that really drew in the crowd. For most of the night everyone was content to relax and listen to them play, but when the band closed with “Little Numbers” the audience couldn’t resist singing along with the catchy song. Lead singer, Valeska Steiner, was so surprised that people knew the words that she stopped singing and stepped back from her microphone to take it all in. This was a perfect reaction because when she trailed off, the audience took over and belted the chorus even louder, much to her amazement. Those are the moments that make seeing these up-and-coming bands so great. Above is a photo I took from their performance and below is their music video for “Little Numbers”!

John Mark Nelson – “Reminisce”

Can you believe that John Mark Nelson is only 19 years old? He’s not new to the musical world either, considering that he already released his sophomore album Waiting and Waiting in August of 2012. With vocals reminiscent of Fleet Foxes and instrumentals that are wonderfully simple in composition yet orchestrated with great care, it didn’t take but one listen of the song below to know I’m hooked. Be on the lookout for his next album, because his kickstarter goal to begin professional recording was just fulfilled two days ago!
