Newport Folk Festival 2014

I love going to concerts and seeing live music, but had never been thrilled by the idea of music festivals. One day of Governor’s Ball after a massive rain storm and I wasn’t sure the experience was worth the insanity…

But then came Newport. My friends and I bought 3-day tickets before the lineup was even announced. It was like Christmas morning everyday a new artist was added. The festival itself was so laid back and well run that the time spent away from the stages was just as enjoyable as the performances: good food, fun vendors, great views. There was even the Family Tent where artists were featured by doing short “pop-up” sets in between main stage changes.

Above is a little montage of my time at the festival, featuring a song by Ages and Ages called “No Nostalgia”. Enjoy (and go to Newport next year)!

Sylvan Esso – “Hey Mami”

Love the arrangement of this Noisey acoustic performance of “Hey Mami” by Sylvan Esso.

Bastille – “Of The Night”

Of the Night is a dark, dance-infused loop of heavy beats. A song that fits in a party scene as much as a murder scene: just watch their recently premiered video. I love to see music videos with such well directed concepts: story lines that create a new perspective of the song instead of stealing attention from it. Listen and watch to the haunting pop of Bastille above.

Sarah Jarosz – “Mile on the Moon”

Spellbinding, mesmerizing: these are the words that come to mind when watching this beautiful performance by Sarah Jarosz recorded by Mason Jar Music. The simple stirring of dust, catching the light that’s cascading through the windows, creates a dreamy suspended atmosphere, pulling the physical performance into the realm of the song.

The Boxer Rebellion – Diamonds

Penny and Sparrow – “Brothers”

Penny and Sparrow give a soulful performance in this acoustic, intimate recording of their song Brothers. It’s the kind of song that can get you through anything if you listen to it enough times. This is for a dear friend who needs it right now.

Crystal Fighters – “You & I”

Synthpop is a popular style but sometimes it can all sound pretty similar! Crystal Fighters has the antidote for any pop rut. Their Spanish-influenced sound comes from incorporating traditional Basque instruments and an upbeat dance tempo that is hard to resist. Below is their recently released video for “You & I”. Catch their newest album, Cave Rave, out on May 27th!
